NANKANA SAHIB – The police claimed to have detained sixty individuals on suspicion of participating in a lynching outside the police station.
In order to apprehend the offenders, police teams initiated a crackdown once the episode became viral. Previously, Sheikhupura Regional Police Officer (RPO) Babar Sarfraz Alpa said that the FIR named many assailants.
He said that the police will leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of offenders. In reaction to a troubling occurrence in Nankana Sahib, the IGP of Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, punished two top police officers for failing to prevent the lynching of a man.
Videos circulating on social media showed a rowdy crowd leaping the gates and attacking the police station in Nankana Sahib. One video showed small toddlers surrounded by shattered glass and toppled furniture inside the police station.
The suspended officials are Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nawaz Viroq of the Nankana Sahib Circle and Warburton Station House Officer Feroze Bhatti. The IGP ordered Deputy Inspector General Syed Muhammad Amin Bukhari of the Internal Accountability Branch and Deputy Inspector General Raja Faisal of the Special Branch to investigate the event and produce a report.
In a statement, he emphasised that no one was above the law and that those guilty for the tragedy and those who were irresponsible would face serious departmental and judicial action.
Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi, the head of the Pakistan Ulema Council, also criticised the event, calling it “regrettable and condemnable.”
Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, took note of the situation and launched an investigation shortly after the terrible catastrophe. He said that the law must run its course.
